Knockmaree Dolmen, Neolithic burial chamber in Phoenix Park, Dublin, Ireland.
Knockmaree Dolmen is a Neolithic burial chamber in Phoenix Park made of stacked stones with a capstone measuring nearly 2 meters (6 feet) long. The rectangular stone structure remains visible and reveals its function as a grave site from thousands of years ago.
Workers discovered the burial site in 1838 while removing a large mound, revealing four stone cists containing urns, pottery vessels, and bone fragments. The discovery dates the structure to the Neolithic period and shows the burial practices of early inhabitants.
The structure follows the Linkardstown burial tradition, a form of grave found on elevated ground across the region. The rectangular stone arrangement you see today reflects how people of that time honored their dead.
You can reach the dolmen by following the paths through Phoenix Park with no entrance fee or set hours to follow. The location within the park keeps it easy to access, though staying on marked paths is recommended.
Excavations uncovered the remains of two men aged around 40 and 50 years old, accompanied by flint knives and shell necklaces as burial gifts. These finds offer rare insights into the funeral customs and daily life of the earliest people in the area.
