Castlebar, Administrative center in County Mayo, Ireland
Castlebar is the main town of County Mayo, sitting in a river valley near the western coast of Ireland. Streets lead through a center with public squares, shops, and residential neighborhoods that follow the course of the Castlebar River.
The de Barry family built a castle here in 1235, and the settlement grew around it over the following centuries. In 1798, French troops and Irish rebels defeated British soldiers in the area during a battle later known as the Races of Castlebar.
The National Museum of Ireland - Country Life, located in Castlebar, exhibits extensive collections documenting Irish rural traditions from the 1850s through the 1950s.
A walking route called the Castlebar Greenway runs about 7 kilometers (4 miles) from the town center through landscapes of fields and river valleys. The path is mostly flat and works well for walking or cycling throughout the year.
The National Museum of Ireland – Country Life on the outskirts of town displays collections about Irish rural life from the 19th and early 20th centuries. The exhibits include everyday objects, tools, and furniture that document how people lived in the countryside during that time.
