St. Michael's Priory, Ballinskelligs

St. Michael's Priory consists of stone remains from a medieval religious complex situated roughly 400 meters south of Ballinskelligs Beach. The ruins display architectural features typical of the period, with several building foundations visible across the site.

Augustinian canons established this priory after leaving their earlier settlement on Skellig Michael in the 12th century. The complex grew to become a significant religious center that underwent various changes over the centuries.

This site served as a pilgrimage destination where people came to pray at sacred locations and deepen their faith. The holy well nearby remains an important focal point for those seeking spiritual connection and renewal.

A pathway from the car park near the beach leads to the ruins with clear signposting along the way. The terrain is relatively flat and easy to walk through, allowing visitors to explore at a comfortable pace.

Seven ancient stones form a healing pathway around a nearby holy well, with each stone traditionally linked to curing specific ailments. This old practice remains visible to visitors today, revealing how the site functioned as a place of healing.
