Derrynane House, Country house and museum in County Kerry, Ireland
Derrynane House is a 19th-century country residence in County Kerry, now open as a museum and national monument of Ireland. Two floors display original furnishings, family portraits, and personal belongings of the O'Connell family.
The house was built in the 1820s under Daniel O'Connell's direction, starting with the south wing before the library section was added. It served as the O'Connell family home during a period of deep political change in Ireland.
The house is closely tied to Daniel O'Connell, the Irish politician who campaigned for Catholic rights in the 19th century. Walking through the rooms, visitors can see personal objects, furniture, and portraits that give a picture of his daily life and family.
The property sits within a large park with walking trails and direct beach access, so a visit can easily fill several hours. It is worth allowing enough time to see both the inside of the house and the grounds outside.
The house still holds the original royal pardon granted to Daniel O'Connell, signed by King George IV. This document is on display inside and is one of the more unexpected items in the collection.
