Maumturks

The Maumturks are a mountain range in Connemara featuring multiple quartzite peaks and a prominent ridge system. The highest summit reaches approximately 700 meters and defines the distinctive profile of this mountain landscape.

The range remained largely untouched through periods of English rule because the rocky terrain was unsuitable for farming. This history helped preserve the natural character of the landscape over centuries.

The name comes from Irish language origins and refers to a mountain pass that holds significance in local tradition. This naming reflects how the landscape has long been understood and woven into the stories of the region.

The terrain is steep and requires proper footwear and good preparation for extended hikes. Allow sufficient time and check weather conditions carefully, as the ridges are exposed and conditions can change rapidly.

Within a remote valley between the peaks lies a pilgrimage site connected to early Christian figures and drawing visitors for generations. This spiritual location is often overlooked by hikers despite its central position in the range.
