Corcogemore, Mountain summit in County Galway, Ireland
Corcogemore is a summit in the Maumturk range located within Connemara National Park and rises to about 611 meters above sea level. A stone cairn marks the top and commands views across the surrounding peaks and valleys below.
The hill was long known by its traditional name until new measurements taken around 2020 revealed its true height and led to official mountain status. This reclassification added it to the country's recognised mountain listings.
The mountain's Irish name 'Corcog' translates to beehive, reflecting the regional naming traditions and connections to local agricultural practices.
Several hiking routes lead to the summit, with the most direct starting from the western side though difficulty varies with weather. Visitors should bring sturdy footwear, layers for warmth, and navigation tools since conditions can change rapidly at altitude.
This location represents the first recorded instance in Irish geographical history where a hill gained mountain classification due to natural height changes.
