Swords, Municipal center in Fingal, Ireland

Swords is a municipal center in Fingal, Ireland, stretching across flat land north of Dublin and marked by a wide main street with shops, housing blocks, and public buildings. The Ward River bed divides the town in two and is flanked by green zones that run through the built-up area.

A monastic settlement arose here in the 6th century and remained through many generations, while secular administrations later developed. In the Middle Ages, church leadership built a fortress that was used until the 17th century.

The name comes from the Irish word for "sword," and today a stone watchtower stands as a reminder of earlier times while modern shops and housing estates grow around it. Visitors often see people walking on the green spaces or stopping at the small cafés near the main square.

Bus stops line the main street and bring travelers to the airport and city center, with vehicles running at short intervals during the day. Pedestrians find paved paths and sidewalks that connect most public areas.

A water tower made of red brick rises near the center and still serves as a landmark today, although it has long been out of use. Some walkers remember times when the structure was lit at night and visible from a distance.
