Rathcroghan, Archaeological site in Tulsk, County Roscommon, Ireland

Rathcroghan sits on a gentle plateau in County Roscommon and features a wide landscape of low mounds, circular earthen enclosures, and shallow ridges. The layout of different structures forms a broad pattern that spreads across pastureland and open fields.

The area began during the Neolithic period and continued as a ceremonial and political site for thousands of years. Further construction and reshaping took place during the Bronze Age and Iron Age, when it became the seat of a regional kingdom.

The cave of Oweynagat features ogham inscriptions and holds connections to Queen Medb, the Battle Goddess Mórrígan, and the origins of Samhain festival.

The visitor center in Tulsk offers guided tours that explain the site and its different monuments. Walking routes are mostly flat and cross open pasture, so sturdy footwear helps during wet conditions.

The Rathcroghan Mound measures 89 meters in diameter and sits atop an earlier monument constructed with two concentric stone-built ring banks.
