Boyle

Boyle is a town in County Roscommon positioned at the foot of the Curlew Mountains, spreading along the River Boyle. The streets feature traditional stone buildings and shops that give the town its distinctive character.

The area saw conflict during the Battle of Curlew Pass in 1599, when Irish forces defeated English troops nearby during the Nine Years' War. This battle became a significant moment in the region's struggle for independence.

The town hosts an annual arts festival each July that brings together exhibitions, live music, and theatrical shows across its venues. Locals and visitors gather to experience the creative energy that these events bring to the community.

The town is served by a railway station on the Dublin-Sligo line with regular train connections to major cities nearby. A bypass road helps keep through traffic separate from the town center, making walking around easier.

Abbeytown Bridge dates from the 12th century and ranks among Ireland's oldest stone bridges, yet it still carries traffic across the River Boyle today. Few visitors realize they may be crossing one of the country's earliest engineering works.
