Cong, Medieval village between County Mayo and County Galway, Ireland.
Cong is a village straddling two counties, positioned on a narrow strip of land between Lough Corrib and Lough Mask lakes. The settlement sits among streams and wooded terrain that shape its character.
The village was established in 1111 as one of five episcopal centers in Connacht following the Synod of Ráth Breasail, which determined its religious importance. Its territory later transferred to the Tuam archdiocese.
The village became known worldwide as the filming location for The Quiet Man in 1952, with scenes shot at Ashford Castle that draw film enthusiasts to explore the area.
The village offers walking trails through Cong Woods, where you can explore native trees and specimen Redwoods on marked paths. The wooded terrain makes early morning or late afternoon visits more comfortable during warmer months.
The Monk's Fishing House extends over Lough Corrib, featuring a hole in the floor where medieval monks caught fish directly from the water without leaving the building. This unusual structure allowed them to fish while staying inside during poor weather.
