Barretstown Castle

Barretstown Castle is a stone fortress featuring a distinctive red entrance door and situated within an estate in County Kildare. The grounds include landscaped gardens and an artificial lake.

The castle was first documented in 1547 as property belonging to the Archbishop of Dublin. The Borrowes family owned the estate for over 200 years before 1918.

The castle now serves as a therapeutic recreation camp where children with serious medical conditions can participate in leisure activities and social experiences. This repurposed role gives the historic site contemporary meaning as a place of healing and community.

The site is located roughly 53 kilometers southwest of Dublin and remains open year-round. Medical staff and volunteers support the daily programs and activities on the grounds.

Elizabeth Arden, the legendary cosmetics pioneer, acquired the castle in 1962 and had the entrance door painted red. This bold color choice matched her signature fragrance brand's iconic hue.
