Threecastles Castle, Medieval castle in Blessington, Ireland
Threecastles Castle is a medieval stone fortress rising three stories with a staircased turret at its northeastern corner. The structure displays the defensive building techniques used in medieval Ireland.
This fortress was built as a Norman outpost at a border region between two spheres of influence. In 1547, English forces and Brian O'Toole fought the Fitzgerald forces here in a major battle.
This fortress marked the boundary where Norman settlers and native Irish territories met. Its location reflects how this place held importance for communities on both sides of that divide.
Entry to the site is through a metal stile in the surrounding fence near the main approach. A small parking area with space for several vehicles sits close to the entrance.
The western doorway features a vaulted stone arch, while the eastern wall has a narrow opening for light. These architectural details show the craftsmanship put into the medieval construction.
