Poulaphouca Reservoir, Artificial reservoir in County Wicklow, Ireland.
The Poulaphouca Reservoir covers 22.26 square kilometers and contains 166 billion liters of water, making it the largest artificial lake in Ireland.
Construction of the reservoir began in 1937, with flooding starting in 1940 when the River Liffey was dammed for the second hydroelectric station in Ireland.
The name derives from Poll na Phúca in Irish, referencing a supernatural creature associated with the original waterfall near the current reservoir location.
The reservoir serves Dublin's water supply system and generates electricity through two 15-megawatt Kaplan turbines imported from Switzerland.
The flooding of the valley required the demolition of 76 houses and submerged several villages, including historical landmarks that needed relocation.
