Cathedral of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St Nathy, Ballaghaderreen, Catholic cathedral in Ballaghaderreen, Ireland.

The Cathedral of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St Nathy in Ballaghaderreen is a Gothic Revival structure built from brick with a prominent bell tower. The building features an eight-bay nave with tall clerestory windows and lean-to side aisles running the length of the interior.

Construction began in 1855 under the commission of Bishop Patrick Durcan, and the building was consecrated in November 1860. It was established to serve the Diocese of Achonry and represents a significant religious building project of the mid-19th century.

The cathedral bears the names of two religious figures: the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint Nathy, reflecting local ecclesiastical traditions. This dual naming connects two venerated saints in the region's spiritual life.

The building is readily accessible to visitors who wish to explore the interior spaces and observe the architectural details. Pay attention to the window designs and spatial layout as you move through the nave and side areas.

The grey brick exterior creates an optical illusion that makes the substantial building appear smaller than its actual size. This effect is enhanced by the colour and texture of the material, offering visitors a surprising discovery about the building's true proportions.
