Rathfran Priory

Rathfran Priory is a Dominican monastery ruin standing on the north bank of the Cloonaghmore River in County Mayo. The rectangular stone structure retains church walls with architectural details including window openings and carved stone elements.

The priory was founded in 1274 by Stephen de Exeter as a monastery dedicated to the Holy Cross. Buildings here were abandoned after the dissolution ordered by King Henry VIII in 1577.

The site was known in medieval times as Raith Branduibh, reflecting deep roots in Irish tradition. This name choice shows how the location connected to the region's past and its importance to local communities.

The site sits about 3.5 kilometers from Killala town in an open rural setting. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear as the ground is uneven around the ruins.

The priory received special indulgences in 1438 for building a refectory and bell tower, signs of significant economic resources. This recognition demonstrates that the monastery held enough wealth and influence to undertake such major construction projects.
