Built in 1462 by the Burke family, the abbey remained active until 1590 when Sir Richard Bingham's forces set fire to the complex during military operations.
The monastery functioned as a center of Irish manuscript production, with scribes translating religious texts including the Meditationes Vitae Christii into the Irish language.
