Punchestown Racecourse, Horse racing venue in Killashee, Ireland
Punchestown Racecourse is a jump racing venue in Killashee, close to Naas in County Kildare, Ireland. The course has three main stands and hosts around 19 race days a year, including a five-day festival in April that features several Grade 1 races.
Racing at Punchestown dates to the 1860s, when the early meetings were called the Kildare and National Hunt Steeplechases. The very first event reportedly drew just one spectator, before the venue grew over the following decades into one of Ireland's main jump racing destinations.
The April festival is known for best-dressed competitions, where visitors put a lot of effort into their outfits and compete for prizes. Stalls selling Irish-designed clothing, jewelry, and crafts are spread around the grounds, giving race days a social character beyond the sport itself.
The grounds are wheelchair accessible, with ramps and dedicated seating areas throughout the venue. For major events like the April festival, buying tickets in advance online is a good idea, and shuttle buses run from nearby towns on race days.
The Hunt Stand, opened in 2018, is described by the venue itself as a social hub rather than simply a viewing area. On non-race days, visitors can walk around the grounds and watch horses train on the course, which gives a very different feel from a busy race day.
