Galtee Castle

Galtee Castle was a country house built on the foothills of the Galtee Mountains, featuring distinctive sandstone walls and an octagonal tower that stood above the surrounding landscape. The estate occupied a prominent location with views across the local terrain.

The site began in 1780 as a hunting lodge for the Earl of Kingston and was significantly expanded around 1892 by Abel Buckley into a larger mansion. This transformation reflected the growing wealth and ambitions of its owners during that period.

The estate served as a social center where privileged guests were escorted to explore the Mitchelstown Caves discovered in 1833.

The location now operates as a public recreation area known as Galtee Castle Woods and can be visited on foot through the local countryside. Several historic cottages and gate lodges scattered across the grounds help mark the former estate's extent.

The estate contained a private race track used for horse racing and an innovative hydroelectric power system installed during the early 1900s. These features demonstrated the owner's interest in both sport and modern technology.
