Rockstown Castle

Rockstown Castle is a five-story stone tower built on a rocky outcrop in County Limerick. The structure features narrow defensive slits, square-headed windows, and a machicolation above the entrance, with most of its original stonework still standing today.

Built in the 15th century, the castle displays architectural features typical of tower houses from that period in western Ireland. Its design reflected defensive needs while providing living quarters for its inhabitants.

Local stories mention hidden treasure buried somewhere in the grounds, which has drawn people curious about what might lie beneath the stones. The legend keeps visitors interested in exploring the surroundings and looking at the details of the structure.

The site is located about seven miles south of Limerick City along the main road toward Kilmallock and is easy to reach by car. The ruins are accessible year-round, but visitors should wear sturdy shoes as the ground is uneven and interior stairs are narrow.

A defensive trench was cut directly into the rock face before the entrance, creating an additional protective barrier. This feature shows how much effort went into protecting the structure from potential attackers.
