Doon Castle, Medieval fortress in County Mayo, Ireland
The castle structure measures 40 feet by 27 feet and stands on an elliptical hill rising 150 feet above the surrounding landscape.
In 1133, Cormac MacCarthy and Conor O'Brien led an invasion that resulted in the destruction of the castle during their campaign through Connaught.
The MacPhilbin family maintained control over multiple castles in the region, including Doon Castle, Ayle Castle, and Aghle Castle during their reign.
The remaining foundation stones of the castle provide evidence of its rectangular layout, with limited space between the main fortification and exterior walls.
The stones from the original castle structure were later transported and incorporated into the construction of Westport House by Lord Sligo.
