Doon Castle, Medieval fortress in County Mayo, Ireland
Doon Castle is a medieval fortress situated on an elliptical hill in County Mayo. The remains reveal a rectangular footprint with compact spacing between the main stronghold and its surrounding walls.
The fortress was destroyed in 1133 when Cormac MacCarthy and Conor O'Brien launched an invasion campaign through Connacht. This destruction marked a turning point in control of fortifications throughout the region.
The castle served as a seat of power for the MacPhilbin family across generations. Their control of fortified sites throughout the region shaped how people organized their lives and allegiances in medieval County Mayo.
The site offers only foundation stones and scattered remains, so visitors should walk carefully across uneven ground when climbing the hill. Wear sturdy shoes as the earth can become muddy or rocky depending on weather conditions.
The stones from the original castle were later repurposed and built into Westport House by Lord Sligo. This recycling means parts of the medieval structure now form part of another grand house elsewhere in the region.
