Pallas Castle

Pallas Castle is a five-story stone tower house in County Galway with thick walls divided into multiple chambers and rooms. The structure stands within a fortified rectangular wall reinforced by round towers positioned at each corner.

The Burke family built this fortification around 1500 to defend their lands in the region. Later, the Nugent Earls of Westmeath took control and restored the structure to maintain its defensive purpose.

The name comes from Irish origins and reflects the building's prominent position in the landscape. Inside, you can see how the layout was designed for defense and daily life, with different rooms serving clear purposes.

The site is accessible from the outside, allowing you to view the structure and the surrounding fortified walls at your own pace. Wear comfortable shoes since the ground can be uneven in places.

The guard room on the ground floor features a dog entrance, a passage designed for dogs to move freely through the fortress. This unexpected detail shows how the builders thought through daily needs alongside defensive requirements.
