Museum of Literature Ireland, Literary museum in Dublin, Ireland
The Museum of Literature Ireland occupies a Georgian house at St Stephen's Green in Dublin, spread across multiple floors with exhibition spaces. Each floor displays manuscripts, letters, and personal objects belonging to various Irish writers.
The museum opened in September 2019 following a partnership between the National Library of Ireland and University College Dublin to present Irish literary heritage. Newman House, the building itself, served as an educational institution where generations of Irish writers received their training.
The building itself was home to Irish writers and intellectuals who studied there during the 1800s, making it a place tied directly to the literary community. Walking through its rooms, you feel the connection between the space and the creative minds that passed through it.
The building includes a connected garden leading to Iveagh Gardens, and there is a café in the lower level for refreshments. You can explore the exhibitions independently or join a guided tour depending on how much depth you prefer in your visit.
The museum holds a first edition copy of James Joyce's Ulysses, one of the most important works of modern literature. Seeing this original copy gives you a direct connection to a masterpiece that many readers only know indirectly.
