Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Public university in Mount Scopus, Jerusalem, Israel
The Hebrew University of Jerusalem is a public institution on Mount Scopus with additional sites across Jerusalem and Rehovot. The main campus overlooks the city and houses faculties for sciences, humanities, medicine, and law alongside research facilities.
The institution was founded in 1918 by Albert Einstein and Chaim Weizmann, opening formally in 1925. It became the first place where teaching took place in Hebrew.
The National Library of Israel, located within the university, maintains the largest collection of Hebrew and Jewish studies materials in the world.
The Mount Scopus campus offers wide views over the city and can be reached by public transport. Visitors can walk through the grounds, with most buildings open to casual entry.
The founders planted twelve olive trees at the groundbreaking ceremony in 1918, which still grow in the botanical garden today. Two of them were planted by Chaim Weizmann himself.
