Sharon Plain, Coastal plain in Central District, Israel
The Sharon Plain stretches about 89 kilometers along the Mediterranean coast, forming a broad flat landscape between mountains and sea. The land today is shaped by cities, citrus fields, and sandy coastal sections.
The plain was important in ancient times because of its location and fertile soil, serving many empires as a key trade route. Modern settlements came much later, while forests and marshlands covered the land for centuries beforehand.
The region has been a crossroads where different peoples and trade routes met for thousands of years. Today you see this layering of cultures directly in the landscape, from ancient sites to modern towns built over earlier settlements.
The region is today part of several larger cities with good accessibility, even though the terrain is relatively flat. Visitors can explore farmland, coastal areas, and urban centers depending on which part they want to visit.
Dense forests covered this area from ancient times until the 18th century, disappearing only in the late 19th century. This natural change completely reshaped the landscape before modern cities developed.
