Tel Aviv University, Research university in Ramat Aviv, Israel
Tel Aviv University is a research institution in Ramat Aviv, a northern district of Tel Aviv, spreading over around 170 acres (69 hectares) and connecting modern campus buildings with planted courtyards. The site divides into nine faculty areas and more than two dozen schools, surrounded by lawns and footpaths that run through the entire grounds.
The institution formed in 1956 from the merger of three smaller teaching bodies that previously worked independently in Tel Aviv. Seven years later, it gained full university status with its own doctoral powers and independent administration.
The wide pathways between faculties have become a meeting point where groups gather before and after lectures. Art installations by contemporary Israeli artists stand at several locations, giving the place a creative edge, while cafés and open courtyards create a relaxed student atmosphere.
The campus is publicly accessible on most weekdays, with entrances reachable from several access roads. Visitors move best on foot between buildings, as the pathways are level and well signposted.
More than three hundred research centers spread across the grounds, covering fields from archaeology to quantum physics. The libraries hold collections in more than a dozen languages, including rare manuscripts from the Middle East and Europe.
