Tzippori Synagogue

Tzippori Synagogue is an ancient house of worship in Sepphoris with remains spanning approximately 20 meters in length and 8 meters in width. The floor displays elaborate mosaics divided into seven distinct sections that combine religious and decorative motifs.

The synagogue was built during the first half of the fifth century on the northern side of Sepphoris, as indicated by archaeological remains and coins found there. This period marked an important era for Jewish communities in the region.

The mosaics depict Jewish religious scenes such as angels visiting Sarah and Temple offerings from Jerusalem. These images reflect how the community expressed its faith traditions through visual art.

The remains are part of Tzippori National Park, which preserves and makes accessible multiple archaeological structures from different time periods. Visitors should allow adequate time to examine the mosaics closely and explore the larger archaeological site.

The central mosaic features a zodiac wheel with Helios driving his sun chariot, along with Hebrew month names and religious symbols. This image combines Greek astronomical traditions with Jewish religious symbolism in an unusual way.
