Yiftahel

Yiftahel is an archaeological site in Lower Galilee containing oval-shaped structures and settlement remains from multiple ancient periods. The excavated area reveals layers of human occupation spread across the landscape.

Excavations conducted between 1992 and 2008 revealed occupation dating to the Pre-Pottery Neolithic B period. This timeframe marks one of the earliest phases of permanent settlement in the Near East.

The plastered skulls discovered here show how early residents honored their dead through special rituals and beliefs. These findings reveal what mattered spiritually to the ancient communities who lived in this place.

The site is located in Lower Galilee and can be found using standard map coordinates, though visitors should check access conditions in advance. The location may have restricted visiting hours or require permission for exploration.

The site yielded the oldest known specimens of domesticated fava bean seeds alongside over one million preserved lentils from ancient times. These remains demonstrate that agriculture began in this location far earlier than previously documented elsewhere.
