Alonei Abba nature reserve, Nature reserve and protected forest in Northern District, Israel
Alonei Abba is a protected forest reserve in the Northern District covering about 960 dunams, home to Valonia oak and Palestine oak trees. Two marked trails guide visitors through different parts of the woodland, each offering distinct views of the forest environment.
The forest suffered severe deforestation during World War I when Ottoman forces removed large sections for military needs. Restoration and protection efforts since then have worked to rebuild this woodland habitat.
The name commemorates Abba Berdichev, a World War II paratrooper who died fighting the Nazis. Walking through the reserve, visitors connect with this personal story tied to the land itself.
The reserve features two trails of different lengths, allowing visitors to choose based on their time and fitness level. Arriving early in the day helps ensure quieter conditions and better light for seeing the plants.
In winter months, especially February, anemones and other early-blooming flowers transform the forest into a colorful display. This seasonal blooming shows how vibrant and alive the woodland becomes during this period.
