Neta, Israel, Community settlement in Lakhish Regional Council, Israel.
Neta is a community settlement in the Lakhish Regional Council, in the southern district of Israel, situated on elevated terrain close to a boundary line. It is a small settlement surrounded by agricultural land in a largely rural area.
Neta was founded in 2012 by former residents of Gaza Strip communities who had been displaced in 2005. Their relocation was part of a wider movement that changed the population of several areas across southern Israel.
The name Neta comes from the Hebrew word for seedling, pointing to the connection with farming that shapes many communities in this part of Israel. The surrounding land is visibly agricultural, with fields and plantations that reflect how residents relate to the landscape.
Neta is a small community, so basic services on site are limited and it is better to plan ahead before arriving. The surrounding area is rural, which means having your own vehicle makes getting there much easier.
A Supreme Court ruling in 2009 cleared the way for the settlement to be built despite objections from environmental groups. This legal case shows how contested the development of new communities in this region can be even before the first residents arrive.
