Shekef, Agricultural moshav in Lakhish Regional Council, Israel
Shekef is a moshav in the Lakhish Regional Council in southern Israel, situated on hilly terrain at roughly 1,380 feet (420 meters) above sea level. The village consists of family homes alongside farmland, including greenhouses and vineyards that shape the look of the surrounding landscape.
Shekef was founded in 1981 as part of a broader effort to develop the Lakhish region with new rural communities. The village grew over time and in 2006 received families who had relocated from another settlement, which expanded its population.
Shekef is a moshav, a form of cooperative village where families farm independently but share common resources and services. This structure shapes daily life in a visible way, with neighbors closely connected through shared land and local routines.
Visiting during daytime is a good idea, as the village is most active when farming work is underway in the fields and greenhouses. The terrain is hilly and some paths are unpaved, so sturdy footwear makes getting around easier.
The name Shekef means something close to "view" or "outlook" in Hebrew, which reflects the village's position on high ground with open sightlines over the surrounding hills. From the right spot, the view stretches far across the Lakhish basin below.
