אנדרטה לזכר חללי המשחתת אילת, Naval memorial in Haifa, Israel
The INS Eilat Memorial is a metal and marble sculpture surrounded by 47 cypress trees, each representing a crew member lost in the tragedy. The installation stands between Hahagana Avenue and Allenby Street in the coastal city of Haifa.
The memorial honors the crew of a destroyer that sank in 1967 after being struck by Egyptian missiles near Port Said. It was first established at the harbor breakwater in 1994, then relocated and renovated before moving to its present location.
The names of the fallen sailors are inscribed on the memorial, along with the motto "No nation controlling the sea was ever defeated". The cypress trees surrounding the sculpture create a quiet space where visitors pause to reflect.
The memorial is easily accessible on foot in the harbor district, situated between two main streets that make it simple to locate. It regularly hosts annual remembrance gatherings, creating a reflective atmosphere for visitors.
Artist Yigal Tumarkin designed the work with careful attention to symbolic landscape elements that visitors often miss at first glance. The arrangement of cypress trees creates a geometric pattern that gives the space a meditative character.
