Assaf Siboni lookout, אתר הנצחה בישראל
Assaf Siboni lookout is a memorial and viewpoint located at Kibbutz Nir Am in southern central Israel. The site features an observation platform with ceramic tiles displaying illustrations of bird species that inhabit the area around the Nir Am reservoir.
This site commemorates a 1997 helicopter crash in Lebanon that claimed the lives of 73 Israeli soldiers, including a young soldier from this kibbutz. That incident was one of the deadliest military aviation accidents in the nation's history.
Wind flutes made of copper produce soft sounds as the breeze passes through them, creating a musical memorial to the young man remembered at this site. Visitors can experience how the natural landscape becomes part of the remembrance.
The site is accessible by driving to the kibbutz entrance and following marked paths that lead to the observation area. A visit is most pleasant during cooler parts of the day, and the paths are easy to walk.
From this elevated position, visitors can look out across the Gaza Strip and see distant views of Jabalia and Gaza City stretching toward the western horizon. This far-reaching sightline offers a geographical perspective on a nearby region often hidden from view.
