Church of Saint Porphyrius

Church of Saint Porphyrius, Greek Orthodox church in Zaytun Quarter, Gaza City, Palestine

The Church of Saint Porphyrius is a Greek Orthodox house of worship in Gaza City with a rectangular floor plan and simple construction. Its interior features a single nave divided by two vaulted bays, and the main entrance is marked by a portico supported by marble columns.

The building was constructed in the 1150s during the Crusader period, replacing an earlier church that stood on this site from 425 onward. This long continuity shows how important the location has been to the Christian community across the centuries.

The church serves the local Greek Orthodox community and maintains its role as a center for this ancient Christian tradition. Visitors can experience the religious practices and devotional customs that continue here today.

The building is easily accessible through three separate entrance points, with the main portal standing out thanks to its columned portico. Keep in mind that this is an active place of worship, so plan your visit with respect for any services or gatherings taking place.

The tomb of Saint Porphyrius, a venerated early Christian martyr, rests in the northeastern corner and draws pilgrims who continue his reverence. This sacred spot connects history and faith in a place of devotion that has endured for ages.
