Salem district, Administrative district in Tamil Nadu, India

Salem is an administrative district in Tamil Nadu, southern India, covering roughly two thousand square miles and sharing borders with neighboring districts. Mountains frame the region and shape its landscape.

Coins from the reign of Roman Emperor Nero were discovered in Koneripatti in nineteen eighty-seven, revealing ancient trade links. This find points to contact between the region and the Roman Empire over two thousand years ago.

The district encompasses multiple communities speaking Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Urdu, with Tamil serving as the primary language for 88 percent of the population.

The district is home to several universities, including Periyar University, as well as many specialized colleges covering different fields. Visitors will find a large area with varied terrain and well-developed roads connecting major towns.

A steel plant produces stainless steel and processes raw materials from the surrounding area, while large fields of tapioca shape the agricultural landscape. The processing of tubers into sago makes the area a major production center for this product in India.
