Latur, District capital in Maharashtra, India
Latur is a city in its namesake district of Maharashtra on the Balaghat plateau at around 515 meters elevation. The Manjara River and its tributaries run through the surrounding region and shape the landscape of the area.
The Rashtrakuta dynasty founded the settlement between 753 and 973 AD under King Amoghvarsha. After a severe earthquake in 1993, much of the city was rebuilt with modern infrastructure.
The name comes from the Rashtrakuta period when the settlement was known as Lattalur. Today residents use it as a center for administration and trade, with local markets offering regional crafts and agricultural produce from the plateau.
The city sits on main roads leading to other places in Maharashtra and offers access to the surrounding plateau. The Latur Pattern describes an educational system with specialized training methods for academic preparation of students.
The annual Shri Siddeshwar fair draws visitors from across the region and showcases traditional arts and music of Maharashtra. During the celebrations, open spaces transform into stages for local performances and regional customs.
