Vidarbha, Historical region in eastern Maharashtra, India
Vidarbha is a historical area in the eastern part of Maharashtra and covers roughly one-third of the state. The landscape includes plateaus, forest zones and agricultural plains that spread between the borders with Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Telangana.
The area gained importance in the 1st century CE under Satavahana rule and passed through several dynasties afterward. During the medieval period it became part of the Berar Subah and was later taken over by British colonial forces.
The name comes from Sanskrit and refers to the land of cotton and wide fields. The area maintains its own dialect of Marathi along with traditional music and dance forms that appear during local festivals.
The eleven administrative divisions lie scattered across the territory, with Nagpur serving as a hub for rail and air links. Travelers can reach the main towns on paved roads, but should allow extra time for longer journeys between sights.
The Lonar crater formed 52,000 years ago from a meteor impact and is now a lake with alkaline and saline water. This unusual water chemistry has produced microorganisms found nowhere else on Earth.
