Leopold Cafe, Restaurant and pub in Colaba, Mumbai, India.
Leopold Cafe is a restaurant and pub in Colaba, Mumbai, located in a corner building with large windows and tables on the pavement of the busy main street. The space extends over several levels with high ceilings, wooden paneling, and fans that create an airy feel.
Iranian immigrants opened the business in 1871 as a cooking oil shop before it evolved into a dining establishment. The choice of name honored the Belgian ruler at the time, who was internationally known in that era.
The venue honors the Belgian king in its name while connecting to the tradition of Persian immigrants who have welcomed guests from across the city for generations. The logo features a lion-shaped drinking vessel from ancient Persian times and points to the Zoroastrian roots of the founding family.
The venue opens early in the morning and serves guests until late at night, allowing visitors to stop by for breakfast or dinner. The central location on Colaba Causeway makes it easy to find, directly opposite the local police station.
Just four days after the severe attacks in November 2008, the venue reopened its doors and drew so many people that authorities had to impose a temporary halt. This moment showed the strong connection between the place and the city's inhabitants.
