Faridkot district, Administrative district in Punjab, India
Faridkot is an administrative district in southwestern Punjab that covers an area of about 1,500 square kilometers and serves as an educational hub. The region hosts a medical university, engineering colleges, and dental institutions that draw students from across North India.
The district was created in 1972 from parts of neighboring Bathinda and Ferozepur districts. Later changes in 1995 saw the separation of Muktsar and Moga districts, reshaping the territory as it stands today.
Punjabi is the main language spoken in everyday life, and Sikhism shapes many local traditions and community practices that visitors encounter. These cultural foundations influence how people gather and celebrate throughout the year.
Main towns are accessible and well-connected by local roads, with plenty of schools and healthcare facilities spread throughout. Visitors should check opening hours for educational institutions in advance and plan their journey accordingly.
The district takes its name from the Sufi saint Baba Farid, who visited the area when it was still called Mokalhar. A local ruler renamed it in honor of this respected holy man.
