Mettupalayam is a town in Coimbatore district, Tamil Nadu, located at the foothills of the Nilgiri mountains. The town sits surrounded by areca plantations and near the Bhavani River valley.
The town was established as a municipality in 1948 and gained first-grade status by 1978. This growth reflected its emergence as an important regional hub.
The population reflects Tamil Nadu's diversity with 69 percent Hindu residents, 25 percent Muslim inhabitants, and 5 percent Christian community members.
The railway station offers regular connections to Coimbatore city and the hill station of Ooty. The nearest airport is about 45 kilometers away.
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway departing from here passes through 16 tunnels and crosses about 250 bridges. It is India's only rack railway system.
