Black Bridge

The Black Bridge is a railway bridge in Wellington that spans 43.5 meters across the Mynala stream. It connects Wellington Cantonment to the national highway linking Ooty and Coonoor.

The structure was first built in 1858 as a railway connection and underwent several reconstructions over time. A wooden version made from Burmese teak with black tar coating was completed in 1878.

The bridge received the name Manekshaw Bridge in 2009 to honor Field Marshal Manekshaw, who chose Coonoor as his final residence. This naming reflects the local attachment to a figure who became part of the region's identity.

The bridge functions as a key traffic connection for vehicles and pedestrians with modern safety features. It is best visited during daylight hours when visibility is good and traffic flow is manageable.

A statue of Field Marshal Manekshaw stands at the junction where the bridge meets National Highway 181. This monument marks a point where visitors can observe both the engineering structure and the historical memorial together.
