Barren Island, Volcanic island in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India.
Located 138 kilometers northeast of Port Blair, this volcano rises 353 meters above the Andaman Sea, forming part of a volcanic chain from Sumatra to Myanmar.
The first documented volcanic activity occurred in 1787, followed by multiple eruptions in 1789, 1795, 1803, 1852, and after 150 years of dormancy, in 1991.
The island forms part of the North and Middle Andaman administrative district, representing geological significance in Indian territorial waters.
Access to this uninhabited island requires special permits from Indian authorities, primarily granted for scientific research and geological studies.
Marine waters surrounding the island contain basalt formations, coral gardens, and manta rays, making it a destination for underwater exploration.
