Sirkazhi, town in Tamil Nadu, India
Sirkazhi is a town in Mayiladuthurai district, in the coastal state of Tamil Nadu, southern India. The town is organized around a cluster of ancient Shiva temples, with streets, markets, and houses spreading out from these central places of worship.
Sirkazhi has been known as a place of religious importance since at least the 7th century, when the poet-saint Thirugnana Sambandar was born here and composed a large number of devotional hymns in Tamil. These hymns, part of a collection called the Thevaram, helped shape the Shaivite tradition across the whole of Tamil Nadu.
Sirkazhi is a place where the worship of Shiva shapes how locals experience their daily lives through several historic temples. The town is known for its connection to spiritual practice and devotional traditions that remain visible in how people interact with these sacred spaces.
The town is easy to explore on foot, with the main temples acting as natural landmarks to help you find your way. Mornings are a good time to visit the temples, when rituals take place and the streets around them are at their most active.
According to local tradition, Thirugnana Sambandar began singing hymns in praise of Shiva at the age of three, after being fed milk by the goddess Parvati at the town's main temple. The spot where this is said to have happened is still pointed out to visitors today inside the Brahmapureeswarar temple.
