Narora Atomic Power Station, Nuclear power plant in Bulandshahr district, India.
The Narora Atomic Power Station is a nuclear power plant in Bulandshahr district that operates two pressurized heavy-water reactors for electricity generation. The facility draws cooling water from the Narora Barrage on the Ganges River to serve the energy needs of Uttar Pradesh.
The facility began construction in 1977 and its first reactor reached criticality in 1989, followed by a second reactor in 1991. This expansion doubled the power generation capacity for the surrounding region.
The facility operates specialized educational institutions, including two Atomic Energy Central Schools that provide education through grade twelve.
The plant is located along the Ganges River where cooling infrastructure connects directly to the waterway. Access to the facility is restricted as it operates under strict security protocols for nuclear operations.
In 1993 the plant experienced an incident when turbine blade failure sparked a fire affecting reactor cabling, which prompted important safety improvements. This event became a turning point for stricter maintenance protocols at the facility.
