The district spans 3,983 square kilometers and contains four administrative subdivisions: Hisar, Barwala, Hansi, and Narnaud with Hisar city as headquarters.
Firuz Shah Tughlaq established the district in 1354, constructing fortifications and a grand palace complex that required two years to complete.
The district population includes diverse groups such as Jats, Bishnois, Brahmins, Sainis, Banias, Gujjars, and Rajputs, with Haryanvi as primary language.
The northern section lies between Ghagghar river and Dhrishadvati river, while eastern and central areas extend between Dhrishadvati and Yamuna rivers.
The district contains five distinct agricultural zones: barani for low rainfall, bagar for sandy soil, nahri for canal irrigation, nali for fertility, and Rangoi.
