Agroha Mound, Archaeological site in Hisar district, India.
Agroha Mound is an archaeological site in Hisar district that preserves layers of an ancient settlement with defensive structures and living spaces. Excavations have revealed the physical layout of a community that developed and changed over centuries of habitation.
Archaeological work between 1888 and 1979 uncovered evidence of continuous settlement from the 3rd century BCE to the 14th century CE. This long span of occupation reflects different periods when various cultures and powers controlled or inhabited this location.
The site holds particular significance for the Agrawal community, who associate it with their legendary founder Maharaja Agrasena's capital.
The site sits about 1.5 kilometers from Agroha town along National Highway 9, making it accessible by road. Bring water and sun protection for your visit, as most of the area offers little shade.
Excavations uncovered more than 7,000 artifacts including coins from Roman, Kushana, Yaudheya, and Gupta periods bearing Prakrit inscriptions. This collection of objects demonstrates the scale of trade and cultural exchange that connected this place to distant regions.
