Eravikulam is a protected area in the Western Ghats of Kerala that covers rolling hills rising to around 2000 meters (6500 feet). The terrain includes grassland, rock formations and small streams winding through the mountains.
The area became a national park in 1978 to protect its wildlife populations. British planters previously used the land for hunting and grazing.
The name comes from Malayalam and means
Shuttle buses from the entrance take visitors inside, as private vehicles are not allowed. The best time to visit is between September and April when the weather is dry and visibility is clear.
The Neelakurinji plant blooms only once every twelve years and covers the slopes with purple flowers. This rare natural event draws thousands of visitors who come to witness the colorful display.
