Raipur is the capital of the state of Chhattisgarh and sits on a plain with numerous canals and wide roads lined by low buildings. The layout extends from densely built residential neighborhoods to sprawling industrial areas, while green rice fields mark the outer edges of the city.
The settlement grew under local dynasties from the 6th century and was later controlled by Muslim rulers and the Marathas. In the 19th century the region passed to British colonial administration and was finally designated capital of the newly created state in 2000.
The name Raipur derives from the local kingdom of Ratanpur and points to the historical roots of the region. Today markets with fresh herbs and street vendors shape the street scene, while residents continue to wear traditional cotton clothing in daily life.
Most sights sit in the central part and are easily accessible by auto-rickshaw or local bus. During the monsoon season between June and September heavy rains may slow down movement, so it is advisable to plan extra time.
A large part of the city population works directly or indirectly in the processing of steel and rice, which shapes the daily lives of many families. Small workshops and warehouses can be found in almost every neighborhood and reveal the industrial character of the region at an everyday level.
