Mahamaya Temple, Raipur, Hindu temple in Purani Basti, Raipur, India
Mahamaya Temple in Purani Basti is a Hindu temple in the old quarter of Raipur, housing two main shrines: the Mahamaya Mandir and the Samaleswari Mandir. Both are built in the Nagara style, recognizable by its tall towers that taper toward the top and its carved stone surfaces.
The temple is said to have been founded around 1,400 years ago by the Haihaya kings, who made it a religious center for the region. The Marathas later reworked parts of it during the 17th and 18th centuries, giving it much of its current form.
The temple is dedicated to Mahamaya, a local form of the goddess Durga who holds special importance in the Chhattisgarh region. During Navaratri, the grounds fill with devotees offering flowers, lamps, and prayers over several days.
The temple sits in the Purani Basti area of Raipur and is easy to reach on foot if you are already in the old part of the city. Visitors are expected to remove their shoes before entering the shrines, as is standard at Hindu temples.
The two shrines on the grounds are dedicated to different goddesses but share the same temple complex, which is unusual for a single site. This means a visit here covers two separate devotional traditions at once, without moving between different locations.
