Sabarkantha district, Administrative district in Gujarat, India
Sabarkantha is an administrative district in northeastern Gujarat, with Himatnagar as its administrative center situated on the banks of the Hathmati River. The area combines agricultural lands with industrial zones that produce ceramics and weighing scales.
The district was formed in 1949 by consolidating 29 princely states and portions of the Ahmedabad district. It became part of Gujarat when the state was established in 1960.
The district contains many religious sites such as Hindu temples, Jain sanctuaries, and Islamic monuments that show how different faiths coexist in this region. Visitors can see how these different beliefs shape the local buildings and daily life.
The best time to visit is during the cooler months when agricultural activity and local markets are most active. Exploring the area is easiest by car, as bus services are less frequent in remote areas.
The Polo Forest near Abhapur contains archaeological remains and traces of ancient settlements that tell of earlier human activity. Today it hosts an organized adventure festival annually that draws hikers and nature enthusiasts.
