Bhuli, Mining township in Dhanbad district, India
Bhuli is a planned workers township in Dhanbad district, in the Indian state of Jharkhand, built around a grid of streets and divided into five residential blocks. The township has its own basic services, including medical facilities and weekly markets, all laid out to support the daily needs of coal workers and their families.
The Coal Mines Welfare Organisation founded Bhuli in 1951 to house workers employed in the expanding coal industry of Dhanbad district. Over the following decades, the settlement grew steadily as mining operations in the region intensified.
Durga Puja is the most visible annual event in Bhuli, drawing residents from across all five residential blocks to temporary shrines set up in open spaces. Preparations for the festival shape the rhythm of daily life for weeks and bring neighbors together across the township.
Bhuli is best reached from Dhanbad city, which is well connected by train to other towns in the region. The weekly markets are a good starting point for visitors who want to get a sense of daily life in the township.
Bhuli was built to be one of the largest workers colonies in Asia and is still run entirely by a single coal company. Every street, building, and service in the township was planned and is maintained by the same organization that founded it in 1951.
